Stephen A Harris CIP Dip L.A.

Stephen founded Harris Claims Consultants in response to the dramatic rise in Burglary and theft claims throughout Dublin and in Leinster as a whole. Harris Claims Consultants provide claims management services to the public and to businesses.

Stephen has lived in West Dublin for more than 12 years. He trained in insurance for nearly eight years as a loss adjuster for one of Dublin's premier loss adjusting companies. He is now a member of The Insurance Institute of Ireland.

Prior to working in Insurance, he trained in Jewellery, Silversmithing, Horology and Art History including, Fine art and Design. Initially, he applied that expertise to retail Jewellery management. He spent 14 years managing jewellery stores mainly in London but also in one of the Premier stores on Dublin's Grafton Street. In addition, he managed a discount jewellery store on Henry street. This gave him experience and knowledge in the full spectrum of all types of jewellery and also luxury designer goods.

In the insurance industry, Stephen specialized in insurance claims where there had been theft or losses involving jewellery. The claims would generally be against household insurance policies, but would usually include some elements of property damage such as damaged windows, doors and alarms. Some claims were for thefts from jewellery stores by customers.

Stephen has seen how insurers benefit from having loss adjusters dealing with their household claims and how policy holders are disadvantaged by not having the support or experience of claims professionals on their side. In many cases when the policy holder does appoint someone to deal with their household contents claim, the assessor may not have the appropriate experience. Most loss assessors have surveying or buildings related experience. Very few have training or experience in Jewellery or replacement values of household goods. This means they will be very usefull when it comes to dealing with floods and fires in terms of reinstatement of your home, but are unlikely to be able to negotiate an appropriate settlement for your lost, stolen or damaged possessions. Some loss assessors are simply not interested in burglary claims because they find them too complicated.

Remember when it comes to burglary or theft our experience is the most appropriate. You may even have suffered the loss of a valuable item, contact us and we will check your policy cover, you may be entitled to a payment.

I had a house break-in where the intruders picked the lock and entered through the front door. The entire house was ransacked. I was devastated!

Since I had all my good jewellery stolen (40 years worth) I contacted Harris Claims Consultants to help with my claim as they specialise in jewellery.

I would like to emphasise that not only was I dealt with in a thoroughly professional manner but more than that I really appreciated Stephen’s empathy and understanding following this particularly stressful and upsetting event. This was of great benefit to me from a psychological point of view. His contribution at this time was invaluable.

Incidentally, I was also happy with the insurance settlement. I would strongly recommend his input.

Remember when it comes to claiming for your home contents, jewellery and valuables, Let Harris Help

Lost valuables/All risks cover

It is a sad fact that sometimes people simply lose valuable property. There is often cover for this, that policy holders are not aware they have so they do not make a claim. This cover would sometimes fully or partially compensate for the loss. If you experience a loss of valuables either in the home or outside and you have home insurance contact us and we will examine your policy to establish whether any cover exists. As it is often not obviously declared to policy holders or hidden in the small print.

In addition a loss of property especially valuables such as jewellery, watches and electronic devices, is difficult to prove to your insurers. We have the experience necessary to help you when it comes to proving a genuine loss. We help you with making reports and statements of the events leading up to the loss.

Even if you are only worried about losing your treasured possessions, but fear losing them in the future, you should contact us to discuss methods of pre-loss protection. For example we can take professional photographs of your items, their receipts, guarantees, valuations or certificates.
We can also give storage and protection advice.

In the event of discovering losses of valuables contact us immediately.

How our claims management / loss assessment systems work.

Broker Services

Pre-loss:

You may have clients that are due for renewal, who could benefit from a review of cover for their home contents insurance. We can advise on the adequacy of their insurance for the coming year and on whether they have items which should be specified for all risks cover. Jewellery and other Luxury goods such as Works Of Art can be difficult to advise clients on.We have the expertise to provide a risk assessment service, from insurance advice to security and protection advice for valuable property. We can also advise on any improvements that could be made to your client's general home security if requested.Clients receive a written record of our recommendations shortly after our visit.

Another service offered by HCC is a professional photographic record taking service - utilising high resolution photography - for significant items of Jewellery, Works of Art, Antiques, Furniture etc. Having pre-loss photographs is one of the main proofs requested by insurance companies in support of a claim for a Break-In or similar loss of contents claim.

From time to time customers require their brokers to be present when faced with the insurance company's loss assessor. We can also act as your representative if the scope of the claim is better suited to us and your client is agreeable for us to do this.

We are happy to provide advice on a general consultancy basis where high value goods are concerned. Terms for this can be agreed depending on the service required.

Post-loss:

We provide Loss Assessing services and expertise in valuable contents items such as Jewellery and Works of Art. As soon as an incident such as a burglary or theft is reported to you by a client, it is advisable to contact HCC to represent your client's interests from the outset. We meet your client to obtain details of the loss and a peliminary list of the stolen items and damaged sustained. If required we meet the adjuster or insurance company representative. Wet then compile and supply them with the claim schedule and assist in providing any estimates required. Following this we can negotiate settlement on behalf of your client however, we will not agree settlement without your client confirming acceptance in writing.

Generally, we will make two visits per case as part of our service ;the initial visit to your client, followed by the meeting with the loss adjuster. Further meetings are rarely necessary and although we will attend, a fee for further meetings will be applicable.

Often insurance companies use outsourced jewellery experts (Loss Adjusters) when dealing with jewellery claims. They will often offer vouchers, gift cards or actual replacements items that your clients may not believe represent a fair settlement for their loss. Appointing us early in the proceedings is far more likely to result in a more balanced and fair application of this settlement method.

As part of our loss Assessing service, we will be pleased to provide general advice on reducing the risk of similar losses occuring. This will be free of charge to clients during or immediately after representing them for loss assessment.

Other Services: Commercial

Talk to us in strictest confidence about other services we may provide your business. These may include but are not limited to : *Loss adjusting:Large/complicated losses such as Burglary or Robberies from Jewellery stores or luxury goods vendors. Robbery of valuables in transit.

*It is our policy to avoid conflicts of interest we therefore would expect to represent the policy holders more often than the insurer. If we become aware of any conflict of interest it is our policy to declare it to those concerned and to proceed in the fairest possible manner.

Domestic Claims

If you have been the victim of a burglary or theft, it can leave you feeling shocked and vulnerable. As well as the financial cost, there is the trauma of having your home broken into and personal belongings and valuables taken. At such a distressing time, you need to feel supported - but your insurance company may not be as helpful as you thought they would.

An insurance company is a business and will aim to protect their interests by trying to pay out as little as posssible. In order to do this they appoint loss adjusters who are insurance experts they will investigate the claim and the circumstances of the crime to see how it can be settled to their best advantage.

It is becoming more and more common for policy holders to employ their own representatives to deal with the insurance company's loss adjusters, in order to negotiate on their behalf. The result is that usually, a more balanced approach and fairer settlement is reached because the policy holders representative or Loss Assessor is trying to achieve settlement in the policy holder's favour.

An insurance loss assessor will manage your claim for you. Work on your behalf so that you are supported and make claim presentation and negotiation as easy as possible. They are likely to speed up the process by being involved as there are two insurance professionals dealing with each other ie the loss assessor and the insurance company's loss adjuster.
